One Community Health (OCH) is proud to be selected as a recipient of SMUD’s 2026 Shine Award, recognized for advancing Affordability & Community Resiliency in the Sacramento region.
Investing in Stronger, Healthier Communities
Through its Shine program, SMUD is investing more than $524,000 in local nonprofit projects that strengthen neighborhoods and create long-term impact.
The program prioritizes initiatives that advance:
- Environmental justice and equity
- Workforce development and economic opportunity
- Clean energy and sustainability
- Community health and resilience
At One Community Health, this mission closely aligns with our own commitment to improving health outcomes and addressing the social drivers of health in the communities we serve. OCH was selected as an Amplifier Award recipient, supporting projects designed to deliver measurable impact within 6 to 12 months.
Powering Healthier Spaces Through Clean Energy
With this award, One Community Health will upgrade lighting at its Midtown campus by replacing outdated fluorescent fixtures in Building A with high-efficiency LED lighting.
Removing old fluorescent lights and fixtures and replacing them with energy-efficient LED light fixtures at One Community Health Midtown campus aligns directly with SMUD’s Clean Energy Vision and 2030 Zero Carbon Plan in ways that are both equitable and inclusive.
Lasting Effects:
- Supports Zero Carbon Goals: By switching to high-efficiency LED lighting, OCH will significantly reduce its electricity use, helping to lower overall demand on SMUD’s power grid. This reduction directly supports SMUD’s target of carbon-free electricity by 2030, as energy savings at community institutions reduce reliance on fossil-fuel backup sources.
- Promotes Energy Efficiency in Critical Community Infrastructure: Community health centers like OCH operate long hours and require consistent lighting, meaning LED upgrades can deliver major energy and emissions savings. The project models how essential, high-use facilities can be leaders in the energy transition—demonstrating climate action without compromising service delivery.
- Advances Environmental Equity: OCH primarily serves low-income, uninsured, and historically underserved populations. Lowering the facility’s energy costs supports financial sustainability, allowing more resources to be directed toward patient care and community health—especially in areas disproportionately impacted by climate and energy burdens.
- Builds Trust & Visibility in Energy Transition: As a trusted institution, OCH’s visible climate-friendly upgrades can serve as a beacon for other nonprofits or health centers and encourage community awareness and participation in energy-saving practices
- Scalable & Visible Climate Action: LED projects are high-impact, relatively low-cost and quick to implement. This makes them ideal for building community trust and showing visible progress toward SMUD’s climate goals, especially in areas that have been historically left behind in energy transitions.

Their Shine program plays a key role in advancing Sacramento’s transition to a cleaner, healthier future while ensuring that historically underserved communities benefit from that progress.
